Our protagonist represents what happens when one unit of consciousness - an individual biological human being suborned to act as a component of a spaceship’s artificial intelligence - gets ripped away from the rest of its multi-part organism due to its destruction. In the book we see a number of characters, both human and artificial intelligences (spaceships and space stations) who are able to simultaneously inhabit a number of bodies or electronic structures. The central concept which Ann Leckie dealt with in her debut novel, Ancillary Justice, was the nature of consciousness in a post-human, futuristic space empire. If you haven’t read Ancillary Justice, you shouldn’t be reading Ancillary Sword or this review. Note: The following review contains spoilers for the first book in the Imperial Radch series, Ancillary Justice. However, the book is let down by a relatively mundane plot and a protagonist who all too often feels like a stage to showcase other characters. When not reading or writing, Jenna enjoys casually playing video games, struggling to knit, and discovering new recipes.Review Ancillary Sword is a worthy follow-up to Ann Leckie’s Hugo- and Nebula-Award-winning debut, Ancillary Justice, and aptly demonstrates the author’s ability to engross readers with an intimate view of her characters. She can frequently be found perusing bookstores for new reads and spends much of her time badgering her local library with purchase requests or stalking their catalog to secure the number one hold slot on her finds. Jenna’s delight in speculative fiction started way back in the day with Tolkien’s The Hobbit and hasn’t seen fit to stop since. Links to all her stories can be found under the Fiction tab, including fan favorites “I Met Her in the Aspen Grove”and “Her Solemn Duty” as well as the much-discussed “Echo.” Her work has appeared in several professional and semi-pro genre magazines such as Daily Science Fiction, Luna Station Quarterly, Flash Point SF, and After Dinner Conversation.

Jenna Glover is a science fiction and fantasy author of flash and short fiction.
